DETAIL: Julia Katrina Heseltine was born at St Pancras, London in 1933, daughter of Guy Robert Nelson Heseltine (1897-1967) and his wife, Anna Katrina née Zinkeisen, who married at Marylebone, London on 25 July 1928. Julia came from a family whose history has been strongly associated with painting, with her mother Anna (1901-1976) and aunt Doris Clare Zinkeisen, both very well-known painters in the mid 20th century. Assisted by her mother, Julia started painting at an early age, with her first commission at the age of 16, being a portrait of Jonathon Porritt (aged four), who went on to become a key figure with Friends of the Earth. Julia studied at the Byam Shaw and the Royal Academy Schools. Her portraits are varied and powerful, particularly her civic commissions, and she developed an exciting technique for compositional vignettes that add mystery and animation to her portraits. Julia developed another looser, more painterly style alongside her traditional type of portraiture. The artist also paints animals and houses in landscape, either as a picture or as part of a portrait. She has exhibited at the Royal Academy from 14 Alexander Place, London in 1956 ‘Robin’, from 20 St Loo Mansions, St Loo Avenue, Chelsea in 1967 ‘Autumn’ and ‘Summer’ and in 1969 ‘Forest’ and a former member of the Royal Academy Schools East Anglia Group. Also showing at Ohana Gallery; Savage Gallery; Clytie Jessop Gallery; Halesworth Gallery and Simon Carter Gallery, Woodbridge with solo exhibitions at Aldeburgh Gallery and Gallery 96, Cambridge. Julia has her studio at Geranium Cottage, The Street, Tuddenham St Martin, Ipswich and has had commissions from Sir Lawrence Olivier, Alan Clark MP, Bamber Gascoigne, Joan Plowright and Ted Hughes and many others. She married at Chelsea, London in 1958, sculptor Charles Anthony Robert Weller (4 May 1927-1 October 1991) and has issue, Tristan Sam Weller.
