DETAIL: American painter who painted from a young age and had her first solo exhibition at the age of 21. Penn and her husband settled in Paris for a while, befriending many artists and musicians including Duke Ellington – who commissioned her to paint his portrait. Later she moved to London before reading an article about an artists colony on the island of Rhodes which centered around Cubist painter Willy Hempel (1905-1985). Penn duly moved there to study with him and later married the artist. Penn is a prolific artist whose work is bold intricate and timeless.
