DETAIL: Born in 1935 in Stepney London into a family of Irish Catholic and Eastern European immigrants he ultimately became one of the top painters of the make form working in Britain in the second half o the 20th Century. He trained at Goldsmiths College in the 1950’s and was greatly influenced by the British artist Keith Vaughan with many of his early work showing the influence – as can be seen here. His paintings range from the shockingly abstract to vaguely cubist or displaying a sense of brilliant realism. Like all great artists his works tell a story and often his are of powerful male encounters.
