TITLE: “New Forest Landscape Hampshire ”

SIZE: 32cm x 27cm inc frame

DETAIL: F G Short was born in Lyndhurst Hampshire and was to remain there for most of his life. He studied at Southampton Art School. Golden Short was loath to leave his beloved Forest for long but did visit London and the north of England and went on painting tours of Cornwall and Devon during the 1880s. His illustrations for F. G. Heath’s Autumnal Leaves of 1881 were reproduced in the Illustrated London News and brought his work to a wider audience while he was still a very young man.
Golden Short exhibited at the RA between 1885 and 1892 at RA and from 1887 to 1892 with the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) at Suffolk Street. He was a regular exhibitor and committee member with the Southampton Art Society. He kept a studio on Lyndhurst High Street but was a familiar figure across the Forest, cycling with his paint box and easel strapped over his shoulder or sketching at a favourite heath or glade. Living in the Forest year in year out, it was Golden Short above all other artists who captured the landscape in all its moods across the seasons. It is his appreciation of light and colour and his ability to convey bracken, heather and foliage with deft and sometimes vigorous brushwork that sets him apart from his contemporaries.  His work is represented in Southampton City Museums, Stockport Heritage Fund, Russell Coates Collection and many other collections.t
