DETAIL: Painter, administrator and teacher, born in Thornley, County Durham. He moved to Australia as a child. Had no formal art training but was assisted by the painter William Dobell and undertook travel studies to England and the continent early in the 1960s and in 1970 and showed widely in England, where his work is held by Manchester City Art Gallery and by other public galleries in Middlesbrough, Swansea and Newcastle upon Tyne, where the Stone Gallery represented him. All Australian state galleries also hold his pictures. Taught widely in Australia, notably at Bedford Park Teachers’ College, Adelaide, from 1973. For about a dozen years from 1958 he directed the Blayland Galleries, in Sydney, where early on he had worked as a designer. Gleghorn was a painter of eclectic style.
